How to identify different types of metals?

A metal is an element, compound or alloy that has a wide range of physical, chemical, electrical and mechanical properties. It can often be difficult to identify the type of metal with the naked eye. The following article will clarify the characteristics of some of the most common metals and how you can identify the types of metals more easily and accurately. Let's learn more about how to identify different types of metals in this article.

Iron

Illustration: How to identify different types of metals?

By mass, iron is the most abundant element on Earth and makes up most of the Earth's outer and inner core. In its pure form, iron is invisible to the naked eye.

Pure iron is soft enough to cut through. We don’t often find it in its pure form because it combines so readily with oxygen that it is impossible to mine iron in its pure form. It is too soft and reactive to be of much use in its pure state, so iron used for everyday purposes is mixed with other elements to create iron alloys. In fact, most iron is used to make steel.

External form

Pure iron is silvery white in color, but it is invisible to the naked eye in this form. The surface of iron is often discolored by corrosion because it rusts easily in moist air, giving it a reddish-brown appearance.

Characteristic

Pure iron conducts heat and electricity very well and is too reactive to exist on its own, which is why it can only be found in its natural form in the Earth's crust as iron ore.

Iron is also extremely magnetic; since the Earth's core is made up of so much iron, the magnetic force created by this force is what creates the North and South Poles.

How to check

The most obvious way to test for the presence of iron is to check whether it is magnetic. Hold a magnet to the metal and see if it attracts; if it does, then you are most likely holding an iron alloy.

If you are more handy, you can even try a spark test, which usually requires applying a piece of scrap metal to the grinding wheel to create a spark, which can then be compared using a chart to determine their classification.

Stainless steel

Stainless Steel is an extremely important metal when it comes to household items, construction and engineering. It can be found in many everyday objects such as cars, refrigerators, boilers, springs and hardware tools.

Unlike other metals, steel is not a chemical element extracted from ore. Stainless steel is an alloy of iron, chromium, carbon, magnesium, and other elements… Stainless steel is primarily made of iron but has become such a useful material that it is considered a metal in its own right.

External form

There are different types of stainless steels made with different physical, chemical and environmental properties. Commonly, stainless steels are commonly used in the market such as:

  • Interior decoration, mechanical manufacturing (Doors, stairs, railings, handrails, fences, gates, balconies...)
  • Airport, subway, station, shopping mall, building, hotel
  • Household appliances, kitchen utensils (knives, scissors, pots...)
  • Air lines, water systems… they tend to be shiny silver.
  • Manufacture of machinery, such as packaging machines, food processing machines, filling machines

Characteristic

Like all metals, stainless steel has its own properties and characteristics due to its composition. The main properties of steel include:

  • It is formable – it can undergo plastic deformation without failure.
  • It is durable – fire and wind resistant.
  • It is a conductor of electricity – especially heat.
  • It is primarily corrosion resistant – it can withstand most damage caused by oxidation or other chemicals.
  • It is magnetic – although this depends on the type of stainless steel and the elements it is made of.

How to check

There are a number of ways you can identify any steel item you may have in your home. First, you can check its appearance, but this isn’t always accurate since stainless steel and aluminum look similar.

Try testing with a magnet, stainless steel is usually magnetic because it is mostly iron.

Copper

Copper has been used for a long time because it is easy to mine and refine. Today, copper is mainly obtained from ores and is used in large quantities in the electrical industry as conductors.

Like iron, copper is generally too soft in its pure form for most uses and is strengthened with other metals to create alloys such as bronze and brass.

External form

Copper is one of the few metallic elements that naturally has a color other than silver or gray. Pure copper is reddish-orange in color and takes on a distinct reddish hue when exposed to air.

Because of its attractive color, copper and its alloys are often used in the production of jewelry and ornaments.

Characteristic

Copper's most notable property is its electrical conductivity, which is why it is used in electrical wiring. It is both a good conductor of heat and electricity and has no tendency to corrode, making it the perfect material for pipes, cables and radiators. It is non-magnetic and, unlike its alloys, is ductile, making it easy to shape into wire.

How to check

It can be easy to mistake brass for copper, but some of its characteristics can be used to determine whether what you have in your hand is genuine copper or not (or it can't be done with a chemical test).

First, the magnet test can show that a metal is probably copper, if no attraction occurs.

Second, check the color: Copper has a natural pink tint when cleaned, like that of a newly minted coin. Copper can also have a green or black tint in places when exposed to water or oxygen.

You can also test the strength by bending it (if thin enough) or by tapping it and listening to the sound it makes. Bronze produces a deeper, more mellow sound than brass.

Aluminum

By mass, aluminium makes up about 8% of the Earth's crust, making it the third most abundant element after oxygen and silicon. However, it is rarely found uncombined in nature and is usually found in minerals such as bauxite and cryolite.

As a sustainable material, aluminum's applications span everyday items such as cans, foil, kitchenware, and aircraft parts.

External form

Aluminum ranges in color from silver to matte gray, depending on the surface roughness. It reflects both heat and light well, making it ideal for things like solar technology and emergency blankets.

Characteristic

The properties of aluminium make it extremely useful for many industries around the world; it is a lightweight metal, reducing energy consumption and costs when used in transportation or construction. Aluminium is ductile, resistant to corrosion and rust. It is non-magnetic and is an excellent conductor of heat and electricity.

How to check

The easiest way to test aluminum at home is with a magnet. Interestingly, if you perform a spark test, aluminum will not produce a spark when struck.

Can metal be recycled?

Almost all metals are recyclable, with iron and stainless steel making up the majority of recycled metals. In addition to being extremely easy to recycle, metals retain their value and most can be recycled multiple times, making them environmentally friendly.

Recycled metals are classified into two types: ferrous metals (which contain mainly iron) and non-ferrous metals (which do not contain iron). Both can be recycled, with ferrous metals being one of the most widely recycled metals in the world.
